Arizona Court of Appeals
On Tuesday, September 10, the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One, heard oral arguments in True North Companies, LLC v. Jai-Yee Lai, regarding A.R.S. § 12-752 a/k/a Arizona's Anti-SLAPP statute (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation). Attorney Zazueta presented arguments on behalf of the appellee, arguing that the appellee's statements made before the Phoenix City Council were protected free speech under the State and Federal Constitution. As an issue of first impression, the court's decision can have a substantial impact on an individual's freedom of speech rights when making written or oral statements before any legislative, executive, or governmental proceeding.
